Bicol University: A world Class University producing Leaders and Change Agents for Social Transformation and Development.

Departmental Vision: A leading Chemical Engineering School producing knowledge and solutions to technological problems of the Region

Mission

Bicol University: The aforecited vision is rooted in Bicol University’s mandate as provided in RA 5521 which is “to give professional and technical training and provide advanced and specialized instruction in literature, philosophy, the sciences and arts, besides providing for the promotion and technological researches (Sec. 3).” Hence, the BU graduates shall be distinguished by their industry, nationalism and integrity. Along this line, extension service to the community and resource generation through its various productive endeavors shall complement the University’s mandated instruction-research function.

Departmental Vision: To provide the an excellent chemical engineering education  to visionaries and future leaders, and to provide knowledge and technology to  solve broad societal problems.

Goals

Departmental Goals:

  1. To pursue knowledge and critically evaluate the impacts of these to the profession and in solving technological problems;

  2. To be able to communicate clearly and effectively;

  3. To demonstrate proficiency in the science of chemical engineering with a strong understanding of the fundamental principles of pure and engineering sciences on which chemical engineering practice is based;

  4. To appreciate their social and moral responsibilities both within their careers in engineering and through service in their communities;

  5. To understand how chemical engineering connects with other major disciplines to produce the goods and services needed by society.

Objectives

The Department aims to:

The Logo

The logo adopted by the BU Chemical Engineering Department composed of three reacting molecular structures in different shades of green. It represents biochemical reactions being catalyzed in active sites in an enzymatic activity. Chemical Reaction Engineering is what separates chemical engineers from the rest of engineering professions.  In addition, biological treatment processes are employed in design of waste treatment facilities. Waste and wastewater treatment engineering are some of the fortes of our profession. This is further emphasized by the the different shades of green, in which in the development of materials and process systems, we use the concept of 'green science and engineering.'

History

The Chemical Engineering Department in Bicol University was born in December 1999 by virtue of Resolution No. 087, s. 1999 by the Board of Regents approved the opening of Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BS ChE) program by the SY 2000-2001; and therefore it is a relatively new program offered by the College of Engineering. It was proposed by Dr. Natividad M. Padre; and it started with 34 students. From then on, it has grown to more than 200 students. The Department also proved its worth in several competitions, board exams, student research forums and other contests, and produced 15 batches of graduates (494 Alumni), and 335 registered chemical engineers since 2005, four (4) of whom were board placers,  namely: Engr. Joseph R. Ortenero, 9th Placer, November 2008 ChE Licensure Exam,  Engr. Michael P. Preña, 7th Placer, November 2012 ChE Licensure Exam,  Engr. Robert Cesar B. Morta, 3rd Placer, November 2013 ChE Licensure Exam and most recently Engr. Joseph Cysty V. Ozaeta, 6th Placer, November 2017 ChE Licensure Exam.
