The Flare is the Official Student Publication of the BU Chemical Engineering Department as part of its commitment to give voice to the studentry and showcase their arts and literary prowess.

History

“The Flare” was officially approved as the Official Publication of the Chemical Engineering Department by the PIChE-JCV Board of Officers SY 2002-2003 and by then the Department Head, Dr. Natividad M. Padre, having Ms. Marie Loiuse A. Chica as its first Editor-in-Chief. It released its first publication issue on the June 2003. The name “The Flare” is derived from the purging of excess syn-gas in catalytic process of refining petroleum products. It symbolizes the burning torch of wisdom and innate intelligence that characterize chemical engineering students. The Second Editorial Staff was headed by Ms. (now Engr.) Cristina M. Centenera, the 4th PIChE-JCV President. It released an issue on March 2005. Then the publication ceased to exist. It was revived again on June 2008, with the leadership of Mr. Jakechris P. Sicad as its EIC. The publication was also renamed as “Helion Flare,” as suggested by the EIC. However, the Editorial Board failed to publish an issue. It then resumed its publication on the next school year under the tutelage of its EIC, Mr. (now Engr.) Francis John V. Bilo. It continued its issuance of paper under the editorship of Ms.(now Engr.) Michelle Kay B. Villanueva and Mr. (now Engr.) Jomari Ace V. Basilla, Ms. (now Engr.) Ariane B. del Rosario, Ms. (now Engr.) Jonnabelle A. Valencia, Ms. (now Engr.) Merciline Joy S. Palaje, (now Engr.) Michael E. Jesoro, and Ms. (now Engr.) Glanelle Ivy S. Cea. Last year's EIC, Ms. Fatima V. Baranquil, with her 22-member Editorial Board, spearheaded the use of Wall News and reverting the name of the publication to "The Flare." Today, It is headed by the recently selected Mr. Austin Matthew A. Olila as EIC for the SY 2019-2020.
